2013 ~ Christian Golf Society | Church Golf | National Church Golf Cup in partnership with CVM

New name engraved on the CGS Premier National Church Golf Cup 2013

There is a new name on the CGS Premier National Church Golf Cup, congratulations go to Banners Gate Community Church from Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands. Banners Gate, represented by John Dadd and Paul Evans, beat Molesey Community Church from Surrey, represented by Mark Blythe and Dave Holmes, in the Final held at Banbury in Northamptonshire.

It was a very close Final with Molesey taking an early lead only for scores to be level at the turn. Paul Evans pared the 11th to put Banners Gate in front for the first time and then secured the trophy on the last chipping in from off the green to win the Cup by 3 points.

The Final was played at Cherwell Edge Golf Club on Sunday 8th September and the players enjoyed wind, rain and sunshine during the round! West Midlands Church Golf Cup Winners Captain John Dadd said he was delighted to have their name on the trophy at last. The Surrey Church Golf Cup Winners and Molesey Community Church Captain Mark Blythe said “Paul played particularly well today, especially as he is adjusting to little sleep following the birth of twins earlier this year!” Mark continued “It was really great to play in a competitive match with both teams doing their utmost to win but at all times playing sportingly. We enjoyed a meal together after the match and the company of the winners if not the match result!”

Both teams are eagerly looking forward to the 2014 Competition.

Paul Evans and John Dadd retain the CGS Premier West Midlands Golf Cup title in style

The West Midlands event (sponsored by Banners Gate Community Church) took place on a sunny and warm afternoon on 26th July, 2013 at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club. 15 pairs took part in the pairs better ball stableford competition with competitors coming as far away as Herefordshire.

The opening shots were taken by former winners George Patterson and Greg Edwards and after the first five holes this pairing was leading by 1 point from Don Davies and Pete Cartwright, Alan Cobbald and Jon Evans, and John Dadd and Paul Evans. However, by the end of the front nine the lead had changed with Alan Cobbald/Jon Evans on 23 points, with John Dadd/Paul Evans on 22 points, George Patterson/Greg Edwards on 21 and Rob Whittington/Rob Wood on 20. By halfway through the back nine John Dadd/Paul Evans had moved into the lead a position they would not now relinquish with early leaders George and Greg, and Alan and Jon both now two points adrift. By the end of the round although John and Paul finished as winners with 41 points (despite the organiser cutting both of them 2 shots for winning in 2012), a surprise package coming through the field with a stormng back nine to finish second on count back with 39 points were G. Taylor and Jamie Cook with Don Davies and Pete Cartwright coming in third on 39 points with George Patterson and Greg Edwards also coming in with 39 points.

Two nearest the pins were competed for on holes 2 and 15 both of which were won by Alan Hobbs, with two nearest the pin in 2 shots on holes 4 and 10 with the winners being John Dadd and Jamie Cook respectively. Sleeves of Titleist Pro V 1's were very gratefully received.

After a very enjoyable meal Alison Nicholas spoke on her early life when she realised that she was the wrong height for tennis and so took up golf. Alison spoke on how life was on the women's tour both in Europe and the USA as she won both the British Open and the US Open, and her role as captain of the Solheim Cup team. She said that coming to faith in Christ had the added bouns of helping her to play golf on the tour as well as captain so many differing personalities representing Europe in the Solheim Cup.

Blythe and Holmes retain CGS Surrey Golf Cup 2013 to reach Premier National Church Golf Cup Final

Results and Report Surrey Christian Golf Cup 2013

The closest finish yet to the Surrey Christian Golf Cup happened at the stunning Traditions golf course in Woking on Saturday 6th July. The hottest day of the year and water on most holes was a beautiful setting.

After 17 holes of birdies and bogeys and great team play 1 point separated the top 3 pairs as they teed off on the challenging 18th hole. The match was decided in surprising fashion when National Christian Golf Cup founder Mark Blythe had his first good hole of the day and put his approach shot to 2 feet from the hole for a nervy tap in for birdie and a 1 point team victory. Partner Dave Holmes had carried Mark until that crucial last hole 4 pointer and it's a team game after all!

The pair are delighted to win the Surrey Christian Golf Cup and are looking forward to an attempt at winning the National Cup at the finals day later in the year. Massive thanks to organisers Mary Stuart and Lesley Blythe and Premier Radio for their sponsorship.

Other Events: Sports Chaplaincy UK on course for a great day out

With 10 days to go and the weather set fair all the right ingredients are coming together for Sports Chaplaincy UK’s Golf Day at Northampton Golf Club on Thursday 11th July.

The prospect of playing this delightful course on the edge of the Althorp Estate with good food and an internationally renowned after dinner speaker thrown in all for £50 is proving an enticing prospect.

Equally worthwhile is the cause to which the proceeds will be going.

Sports Chaplaincy UK has nearly 300 chaplains across the nation providing pastoral and spiritual support on a voluntary basis in sports clubs at all levels, including the three major professional sports teams in the Northampton area.

But in a new development in sports chaplaincy a Sports Chaplaincy UK chaplain has been invited and accredited as chaplain to the GB Squad for the Paralympic Committee World Athletics Championships in Lyon, France, at the end of July. Money raised from the Golf Day will contribute towards his expenses.

And there is still some space on the tee for anyone who wants to join in.

See Sports Chaplaincy website for more info...
