28 Jul 2008 - West Midlands Qualifier

2008 Result and Report

Friday 18th July – Sutton Coldfield Golf Club

The weather was cloudy with a number of showers some heavy with a stiff north westerly wind. The course was (still is) in great condition with rough at times to rival Royal Birkdale.

The front 9 proved to be the easier of the 18 with scores between 18 points from Bryan Hewett/Ivor Cross representing Solihull Renewal and 26 points from John Dadd/Paul Evans Streetly Community Baptist Church. The nearest the pin on hole 9 was won by Bill Marks (Kingstanding Elim) with a thinned 7 iron finishing about 5 feet from the pin. (He missed the birdie!)

On the back 9 it was clear that John and Paul had shot their bolt coming back in a poor 14 points for a total of 40 and 6th place. Three teams battled out for the first prize with Tony Whittington and Dave Berry (Streetly Community Baptist Church) finishing strongly for a total of 43 points. In second place only on a back 9 countback was Bill Marks and Scott Ellwood with 45 points but the winners are Phil Yates and Keith Watts (Walsall Christian Fellowship). The longest drive on the 14th went to Scott Ellwood with a massive hit but which he failed to turn into a birdie.

Final scores of the 9 pairs were between 45 points and 36 points.

Following the three course meal George Patterson gave us a golf quiz (won by Paul Evans) which generally showed up golfer’s general ignorance about their sport! George went on to talk to us about how an Amazonian native wouldn't know what a mars bar tasted like until he'd eaten one so the same is about Jesus. How do people know about Him unless Christians tell others and we help them to 'taste' him so to speak. He also gave personal testimony about how Jesus came back into his life and how he gives answers to life's problems which Christians are not immune from.

The evening finished with a promise from George that we would organise the competition again next year.
